High Reliability Organization

by Press Ganey

Grady has strategically invested in the HRO platform to enhance patient safety and reduce harm. HRO provides a comprehensive solution for tracking safety events, understanding their root causes, and implementing proactive measures to prevent their recurrence. The HRO platform fosters a psychologically safe environment, encouraging employees to report errors without fear of blame, and utilizes the Swiss Cheese Model to implement multiple layers of defense against potential risks.

What is an HRO?

An HRO is an organization that succeeds in avoiding catastrophes in an environment where normal accidents can be expected due to risk factors and complexity. Air traffic control, airlines, and nuclear power plants are some examples of HROs. Within an HRO culture, everyone is acutely aware that even small failures in safety protocols or processes can lead to catastrophic outcomes. Creating an environment supporting an HRO mindset is essential to achieving Grady’s quality and safety goals.

Grady's Implementation Plan

Grady’s HRO team, in partnership with the Press Ganey team, will complete the current state validation and share recommendations. This phase includes gathering background data, documents, focus groups, and interviews. In 2023 and part of 2024, the Press Ganey and Grady project team will implement high reliability trainings across the organization, grounded in change management principles. The last phase will focus on planning for sustainability.
